Jakarta. The Jakarta Intercultural School held a wayang, or shadow puppet, show led by world-renowned puppeteer Ki Purbo Asmoro in Jakarta on Thursday (02/11).
Wayang has been included in the list of Unesco's Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since November 2003.
The 56-year-old puppeteer has performed thousands of all-night wayang shows across Indonesia and also toured the United States, Britain, France, Austria, Greece, Bolivia, Japan, India, Singapore and Thailand.
The wayang performance in Jakarta was titled "The Meditation of Arjuna," and it told the story of Arjuna, one of the heroes in the ancient Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata, meditating in the mountain to gain more power. However, the more power he gains, the bigger the mountain becomes, until it threatens to destroy Heaven, so he gives up and retreats.
"A wayang performance is a form of art that contains teachings to develop a good character, such as honesty and a willingness to give back to society," said Elsa Donohue, the principal of JIS Elementary School.
The event is part of the annual JIS Cultural Week, which started on Monday and ends on Friday, to showcase various cultures to the school's students, who come from 60 countries.
Besides the wayang performance, there was also a series of workshops presented by 20 artists, including puppeteers Ki Agus Wiranto and Ki Wiji Santoso, gamelan player Wakidi Dwidjomartono and sculptor Ki Gamblang of Banyuwangi, East Java.
JIS, which has more than 2,400 students, is the largest school in Indonesia and it offers early childhood classes, an elementary school, middle school and high school.
